Bowling Season Ends

For eight weeks, the men at Mercer home participated in the ARC of Lee County bowling. While participating as a team and as individuals, the men got a chance to bowl with different teammates every week. March 29th ended the bowling season. This past Monday was celebrated with an awards banquet that featured all of the participants. The men received medals and trophies for their great accomplishments this season.

Special Ministries Sunday

On March 7, 2010, the men and women of Mercer and Lanier Homes lead worship during both the 8:45 and 11:00 services. The men and women ministered through songs, prayer, and scripture. Mary offered the offertory prayer and Alex exalted through scripture. They all blessed the congregation with their talents by performing a selection with the handbells. Family and friends came as far as Wilmington to share in this special Sunday. The day ended with a catered lunch from Ron’s Barn and any dessert the heart could imagine. They did a great job! Special Ministries Sunday is the first Sunday in March at First Baptist Church in Sanford.

Sanford Parents and Residents Welcome New Administrator, Lisa Yancey

Parents and residents came together Monday evening, January 25th for a meet and greet for Lisa Yancey. Lisa is Sanford Homes' new Administrator, and we are so glad to have her on board. She has a Masters degree in Management and an undergraduate degree in Leisure Studies and Recreation Administration. Lisa has had her Qualified Professional status since 2006, which proves her knowledge and experience with this special population. Parents and residents were very excited to get to know her this evening as everyone enjoyed some good food and laughter together. We look forward to a bright 2010 with great leadership in Sanford!!

Sanford Hosts Christmas Party and Open House

Mercer and Lanier Homes were spotless and beautifully decorated to host various events on Friday, December 4th. After a good parent meeting at Lanier Home, parents walked over to Mercer Home to join the residents, staff, and other special guests at the Christmas Party and Open House. The residents and staff were dressed in their red and green and greeted everyone at the door with happy smiles and warm hugs. They had spent the day preparing a wide array of delicious finger foods and even had a unique chocolate fountain to add a special spark to the table. It was a great opportunity as some guests had never seen our homes before and thought they were just beautiful. The evening ended after a round of memorable picture taking to signify this wonderful time together with friends and family. Thanks to everyone who joined us in this special evening!

Succeeding at Sandhills Community College

Sandhills Community College (SCC) Compensatory Education Program is a jewel of a day program for our residents in Sanford. All of our residents attend this program to varying degrees. Those who are already employed attend when they are not working and those who are not yet employed are learning valuable job skills for future employment. Recently, all of our residents who participated in the Disability Mentoring Day received an award for participating. In addition, we currently we have two residents, one from Mercer and one from Lanier, enrolled in the JOBS NOW program. Both of them have chosen the food service industry, and they are receiving both hands-on, as well as classroom instruction, which is preparing them for a job in the community. Way to go!
