Suceeding at Sandhills Community College

Sandhills Community College (SCC) Compensatory Education Program is a jewel of a day program for our residents in Sanford. All of our residents attend this program to varying degrees. Those who are already employed attend when they are not working and those who are not yet employed are learning valuable job skills for future employment. Recently, all of our residents who participated in the Disability Mentoring Day received an award for participating. In addition, we currently we have two residents, one from Mercer and one from Lanier, enrolled in the JOBS NOW program. Both of them have chosen the food service industry, and they are receiving both hands-on, as well as classroom instruction, which is preparing them for a job in the community. Way to go!

Sanford Homes Give Back to the Community

Our guys and girls at Sanford love to give back to the community in which we live. One thing we have done is adopt a nursing home nearby and enjoy participating in various activities with the residents that live there. We go at least once a month and play Bingo with them. Another thing we have done is volunteer for the "No-Scare Fair" held at the Steven's Center. It was a Halloween celebration for children of all ages and abilities. Our group dressed up in their finest which included a punk rocker, a princess, and a pirate to name a few. Candy was given out (and probably a little eaten, too). It was a fun and festive time!

Sanford Homes Enjoy a Mountain Retreat

The guys and girls of Mercer and Lanier went to the BCH Craig Cottage for a mountain retreat in late October. The fall foliage was at its peak and was absolutely beautiful. A trip was made to the lovely Biltmore Estate. We toured the house and gardens and saw how wine was made. We also visited quaint Black Mountain and had fun exploring the shops. Lastly, we rode on the Blueridge Parkway and visited the Folk Art Center. We saw two very impressive demonstrations, blown glass ornaments and broom making. A great trip was had by all on this nice mountain getaway!
