An A-Mazing Day!
We would like to send out a special thank you to Jerry and Laura Brown for the donation of tickets to the New River Corn Maze in Deep Gap. The residents enjoyed going through the maze and trying to find their way out. They also played games and went on a hay ride. We are very grateful for this opportunity as many of the residents have never been to a corn maze. Thank you Jerry and Laura!!! I would also like to say thank you to Marianne Ferlazzo for connecting us with these lovely people in the community!

World Gratitude Day
September 21st is World Gratitude Day. It just so happened that the Parent Meeting was held on this day as well. The guys showed their appreciation for their parent or family member by signing a card that told them how much they were appreciated as well as held a dinner for them. April a CAP worker at Lindsay Home prepared dinner that night for the families! The guys that had family members come to the meeting had the opportunity to served their family dinner and give them their cards. A read a poem entitled “Heaven’s Very Special Child” was read to the parents by a resident after dinner was served. The families of Three
Forks Home’s residents are very appreciated by both residents and staff. We as staff appreciate the chance to cross paths with each person that lives at Joy Cove Ministries!
Thank you for who you are!
The poem read is as follows:
Heaven’s Very Special Child
In Loving Memory Of Curtis L. Hendley
Submitted by Leana M. Hendley
A meeting was held quite far from earth,
“It’s time again for another birth.”
Said the Angels to the Lord above,
“This special child will need much love.”
His progress may seem very slow,
Accomplishments he may not show;
And he’ll require extra care
From the folks he meets down there.
He may not run or laugh or play.
His thoughts may seem quite far away.
In many ways he won’t adapt,
And he’ll be known as handicapped.
So let’s be careful where he’s sent;
We want his life to be content.
Please, Lord, find the Parents who
Will do a special job for You.
They will not realize it right away
The leading role they’re asked to play.
But with this child sent from above
Comes stronger faith and richer love.
And soon they’ll know the privilege given
In caring for this gift from heaven.
Their precious charge, so meek and mild
Is Heaven’s Very Special Child.

2,4,6,8 Who Do We Appreciate!
The week of September 11, 2011, was designated by Governor Perdue as “Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week.” DSPs provide essential daily support to enable people with disabilities and their families to live healthy, community inclusive lives.
DSPs support people to live, work and participate fully in their communities. People who receive direct supports include individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, people with chronic health conditions, and older adults. Direct support professional job titles vary, and include in-home support worker, personal assistant, habilitation technician, job coach, direct support worker, and life skills coach. DSPs are essential to ensure that people who rely on supports can live healthy, safe lives as contributing members of their communities.
In honor of the DSPs that work closely with the residents of Joy Cove Ministries, the residents signed a card of appreciation and put together a little sweet treat for the DSP’s in their lives. These people included job coaches, case managers, AVDP staff, Follow Along staff, teachers, mentors, CAP workers, etc. Those of us at Joy Cove want to make sure that our circle of support know that they are appreciated!
