Family Appreciation Dinner
On Tuesday evening 11 October, the women from Lanier and the men from Mercer hosted a formal dinner party for family members in appreciation for the support they have shown not only to their family members but to the staff as well throughout the year.
The evening started out with a prayer from Mr. Ron Huber, with a sit down dinner following. The residents helped prepare salad, lasagna, chicken alfredo, bread sticks, and delightful, petite small cheesecake squares for dessert. The evening turned out to be a big success with parents getting reacquainted with each other again. There was much laughter, conversations, and good times to be had for sure. This was just a prelude for the events to surely follow for the upcoming holiday season.

Peach Festival
On Saturday July 16, 2011 we had a blast at the Peach Festival in Candor, North Carolina! And what a day it was, we met the ladies from Asheboro home there and watched the Peach Festival parade which began the festival. We saw all sorts of cool things during the parade, like men in mini race cars speeding around, antique and new tractors, horses, and refurbished cars. After the parade we followed the crowd of people to the heart of the festival in downtown Candor where all the “action” was taking place. There were numerous vendors selling crafts, food vendors, of course the Peach mascot, and live music from the Sand Band! What great music they were playing. Marshall and Terri enjoyed the music with some dancing, and since Marshall’s dancing is so unique he was able to get on the stage with the band and dance with band members! And what would the Peach Festival be without, but of course, peach ice cream, peach cobbler, and homegrown peaches from local farmers. It was just a “peachy” kind of a day for all of us. Oh, and while we were there enjoying the music, we got a surprise visit from the ladies from Lanier. So all in all, it turned out to be a good day spent with our good friends, and new friends that we made there. Definitely something we look forward to doing next year!

Function at the Junction
Every Thursday evening this summer at Depot Park in downtown Sanford the men from Mercer have been bringing their lawn chairs and enjoying a variety of musical concerts out on the lawn. From Country, Bluegrass, Folk Rock, Blues, to Jazz, this is a good way to enjoy different music outside, meet new people and do a little dancing with friends at the Depot. The summer just keeps getting better, and better!!

Homeland Creamery
In June the men of Mercer home in Sanford were fortunate to be able to tour a local dairy farm. Located in Julian North Carolina, Homeland Creamery produces fresh local whole milk, ice cream, buttermilk, chocolate milk, eggnog, and butter. The creamery has been producing these fine products for six generations since the 1930’s and has grown from a half dozen to over 200 cows now. The men were able to sample some of the products, see the milking process in action, watch as the baby cows were being fed, and hand milk the “simulated” cow. WOW, what a great experience!!
