April Beach Trip

The men of Mercer group home took their annual trip to Indian Beach in April.  It was a joint venture vacationing with the women from both the Lanier and Asheboro group homes also.  The trip was a week filled with sight seeing, shopping, eating, and fun in the sun with a little bit of relaxation for all three group homes.

The trip began Wednesday April 13, leaving from each home early in the morning and arriving at the beach house in time for lunch and a little relaxation on the beach.  Thursday the men enjoyed a tour of Fort Macon in the morning, walking and enjoying the sun on the beach in the afternoon.  On Friday a 1 ½ hour boat tour on the Crystal Coast Lady was planned which included lunch on board the 75 foot all aluminum custom design super cruiser and boat tour of the inter-coastal waterway which included sights of the Wild Horses of Shackleford Banks.  After the boat tour a walk through the historic town of Beaufort and a history of Blackbeard, his house, the waterway lookout, and a tour through and old grave yard in Beaufort ended the afternoon.  On Saturday the residents went shopping, visited the aquarium which included the chance to touch the alligators and stingrays, then dinner at the local seafood buffet satisfied the hungry residents.  Sunday the residents played Putt Putt, did more shopping and watched kite flying on the beach.  Sunday evening was uneventful with each resident getting their things together for the trip home on Monday morning.

With a total of twenty-two people, including staff, this beach trip was a trip to remember.  This being the first time the Asheboro ladies were able to experience the beach and the beach house.  Everyone had a great time getting to know one another, cooking together and just having fun enjoying each others company.  This will definitely be something to look forward to next year!

Sanford Represents the Developmental Disabilities Ministry

The Sanford homes recently celebrated one of its staff.  Nancy Hardy recently won the Direct Service Award for the Developmental Disabilities Ministry.  This award is not easy to come by.  Nancy has been a residential caregiver in Sanford since the homes opened in the summer of 2008.  Nancy has been working with individuals with disabilities for almost nine years.  Working with the women and men in Sanford is a passion Nancy truly enjoys.  She is respected, loved, and admired not only by the residents but also the by the family and guardians who have entrusted Nancy to care for their family member.  Congratulations Nancy!

Special Ministries Sunday

The men of Mercer Home participated in Special Ministries Sunday this past Sunday.  Several of the men had a part in the service; Jeff rendered the prayer and Marshall blessed the church with a scripture reading.  All of the men sang in the choir and played a hand-bell selection.  Many of the men’s parents, sisters, nephews, aunts and uncles came to support this once a year event.  It was nice to see the church overflowing with support and love on Sunday. The afternoon ended with a catered lunch.

DDM Administration Enjoys Fun and Learning at the Beach

image

DDM Administration, which includes office staff and state-wide administrators, enjoyed some fun and learning together at the BCH beach cottage this past fall.  It’s not often you get to be in a relaxing, stress-free environment and have the opportunity to get to know the people you work with everyday.  Building relationships between co-workers is essential in being able to work as a team in day to day life on the job.  We worked hard during our trip, as this was our scheduled quarterly meeting.  But, we played, too!  We visited the Cape Lookout lighthouse, road a boat, saw wild horses, and even helped some local fisherman catch some fish.  The weather was perfect for a day out on the ocean!  We enjoyed our time at the BCH beach cottage and look forward to doing this again one day!

Playing for the House of God

The Men at Mercer Home visited Fellowship House of God in Carthage with Sandhills Community College’s Compensatory Education Program on Saturday, January the 15th.  The men, along with their freinds, blessed the church with the joyful sounds of the handbells and hand chimes.  The program at SCC is well-known in this area for their musical talents.
