The staff at Joy Cove are so proud of Maria for acheiving 100% on every single goal for the month of February. Maria works hard on her chores and helps her housemates as needed. Maria has worked at Ruby Tuesday’s for going on 6 years and is doing well. Maria is such a joy to be around and has a great sense of humor. We wanted to talk some time to brag a little on such a huge accomplishment! Congrats Maria!

Boxes of Joy

The ladies at Lindsay Home got the opportunity to paint and decorate wooden boxes however they wanted with a group of students from ASU. ASU has a program called Alternative Spring Break, this is where student donate their time during spring break to give back to others. The group that came to Joy Cove traveled to Pennsylvania and gave their time to some adults with Developmental Disabilities. They wanted to give back to their own community and get some experience with the population before going to PA. The ladies were very excited about hanging out with the students and were proud of the work they did on their boxes.

The R-Word Campaign
The R-Word Campaign is a mission to end the use of the word “retarded.” The goal is to get individuals to make a pledge to not use the r-word and promote inclusion and acceptance of the with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
How “retardation” went from a clinical description to a word of derision
When they were originally introduced, the terms “mental retardation” or “mentally retarded” were medical terms with a specifically clinical connotation; however, the pejorative forms, “retard” and “retarded” have been used widely in today’s society to degrade and insult people with intellectual disabilities. Additionally, when “retard” and “retarded” are used as synonyms for “dumb” or “stupid” by people without disabilities, it only reinforces painful stereotypes of people with intellectual disabilities being less valued members of humanity. (from the special olympics website)
How is Joy Cove involved with the campaign? Catlin, a resident at Lindsay Home, was asked to participate in the R-word Campaign at ASU at the Special Olympics table on February 28th. Catlin spoke to people about her personal experiences as well as helped other to take the pledge. She was also featured in the local newspaper, The Watauga Democrat, for this event. We are proud of Catlin for taking a stand for a good cause.
