Life Skills Class Gone to the Birds
Hannah is our very first “official” student volunteer at Joy Cove. Her main job was to create a life skills class that would increase the residents interest and make it a better learning atmosphere. She has done a marvelous job engaging the ladies at Lindsay Home and made learning fun. During this particular class, Hannah made a turkey out of foam paper with a descriptive word on each tail feather that would describe the other residents in the group. She asked each resident to choose a trait and to name the person with that trait. They had a conversation about a persons physically different traits and how it is okay to have different hair color and be different heights. Then they had a conversation about personality differences and thing that people might say that make the ladies feel good and things that might make them feel bad. Lastly, each lady got a turkey feather with the words “What I like about me is…” on it and each person wrote what they liked about themselves. Hannah did a wonderful Job with this activity and the ladies enjoyed it! Thank you Hannah!

Sew….How do you do This?
Patti and Diane from Mount Vernon Baptist Church have volunteered to come occasionally and teach our ladies to sew. On October 25th these ladies and helpers come out to Lindsay Home to help the ladies to make reusable snack bags. All of the ladies enjoyed intereacting with the visitors and actually being able to use the sewing machine. Patti and Diane also provided dinner for the residents as well. We appreciate both the lesson and the dinner that was provided. We look forward to the next activity with these ladies!

An A-Mazing Day!!
We would like to send out a special thank you to Jerry and Laura Brown for the donation of tickets to the New River Corn Maze in Deep Gap. The residents enjoyed going through the maze and trying to find their way out. They also played games and went on a hay ride. We are very grateful for this opportunity as many of the residents have never been to a corn maze. Thank you Jerry and Laura!!! I would also like to say thank you to Marianne Ferlazzo for connecting us with these lovely people in the community!
