encouragement
“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” Thessalonians 5:11
This is the verse that we build our home around at Alverta Bolick. We intentionally build one another up, encourage one another, and speak praises with our lips. It is refreshing to be in an environment where everyone is accepted and encouraged in who they are and the gifts that God has given them. We have an “encouragement chair” and you never know who is going to be in the hot seat. The boys will go around and speak encouragement to the person in the chair, but it doesn’t stop there… it happens at meal times, on the gym floor, playing video games, in church…
To often we hear what we are not, but we encourage the guys to speak into each other’s lives of “who they are.” Just for the record: God thinks they are special and so do I !

Basketball Skills Clinic held at Chapel Hill
Two of our residents were chosen to represent Buncombe County Special Olympics at a skills clinic that was held at UNC-Chapel Hill on Sunday January 17, 2010. The well known collegiate basketball team was on the gym floor with the participants teaching them skills they can bring back to their team in Asheville. Coach Roy Williams provided 1:1 tips to our residents in which were taken in stride and greatly appreciated. GO TARHEELS!!

NEW Residential Care Giver
We would like to welcome Paul S. to the Alverta Bolick Team. He has been a real trooper and a great assest already. The boys are tickled to have a positive male influence in the home. They already brag on his cooking and he knows the way to their heart: meat and potatoes! Paul works very well with the guys and displays great integrity and Christian values that make a difference in the lives of the residents. WELCOME ABOARD PAUL… never a dull moment for sure.

Snowy Day…
The residents at Alverta Bolick were snowed in for four days in the beginning of Januray. They did not seem to mind being cooped up inside, because they were busy having WII-Sports tournaments. I would say that these boys got a jump start to participating in the “biggest loser” at BCH: their favorite games are running, step aerobics, tennis, bowling, and skiing. This has been a great way to get the boys up and moving and to learn to work as a team as well as set goals for themselves. A few of our guys have already seen results in weight loss, in building upper body strength, and improving on hand and eye cordination. We could do a commerical for the WII-Fit!
